CT - CTA ( CAT scans )

Tech with patient"CT" scan, or sometimes called "CAT" scan, stands for computerized tomography, a valuable, painless, diagnostic test that allows radiologists to see inside some areas of the body which cannot be seen using conventional x-rays. Areas of the body which may undergo a CT scan include the head, chest, liver, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands, kidneys or spine. A CT scan also has diagnostic capabilities for complex medical conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and vascular stenoses.

A CT scan produces a series of pictures that are then reconstructed by a computer into cross-sectional views. This technology has advanced so markedly over the past few years that it has greatly altered treatment courses. Since physicians can now see parts of the body they were never able to see before, they can detect many conditions in earlier stages, greatly optimizing patient outcomes. CT scans are invaluable in a variety of clinical applications:
  • trauma/emergency room situations
  • digestive tract procedures
  • cancer screening and diagnosis
  • pulmonary embolism detection
  • inner ear ailment identification
  • spinal injury assessment
  • organ donor screenings

tech with patientMass General West Imaging is one of the few facilities that uses the GE LightSpeed CT™ QX/i scanner to take pictures of your body. This state-of-the-art machine provides pictures of exceptionally high resolution. This means results have an excellent image quality which gives physicians important information for diagnosis and treatment. Our scanner is up to six times faster than other CT scanners. Its more efficient use of x-rays permits extraordinarily fast scan times. Patient appointments are quick, sometimes as short as 10 minutes.

MRI - MRA - MR Arthrography

MRI scannerMagnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a valuable, painless, diagnostic test that allows radiologists to see inside some areas of the body that cannot be seen using conventional x-rays. This technology has advanced so markedly over the past few years that it has greatly altered treatment courses. Physicians can detect many conditions in earlier stages, greatly optimizing patient outcomes.

Areas of the body which may undergo a MRI scan include the head, chest, abdomen, vital organs, joints, spine or extremities such as hands, wrists, ankles and feet. MRI scans also have capability to diagnose diseases of blood vessels in the brain, neck, and body.

Mass General West Imaging, offers a full range of MRI / MRA applications. Our GE Signa Horizon LX MRI system uses the latest in medical technology to help doctors accurately diagnose medical problems faster, such as in the following clinical applications:

Neurology

  • Echo planar imaging with diffusion/perfusion offers faster diagnosis of stroke.
  • Spectroscopy offers better evaluation of brain tumors.
  • Functional activation assists neurosurgeons in preoperative planning.
  • High resolution 3D imaging of the brain offers improved evaluation of patients with epilepsy.

GI/GU ( Abdominal Imaging )

  • Enhanced respiratory triggering provides better visualization of the liver, pancreas and kidneys.
  • Faster, more versatile breath hold techniques allow for better abdominal and pelvic imaging.
  • Improved magnetic resonance cholangio-pancreatography offers noninvasive diagnosis of pathologies of the biliary system.

Dr. Palmer with patientOrthopaedics

  • New coils, developed at MGH, offer improved imaging of the elbow, hand and wrist.
  • New technologies provide better visualization of joint cartilage.
  • There is now better fat suppression for diagnosis of bone and joint pathologies.

Vascular

More versatile parameter selection increases the accuracy of MRA imaging.
The floating table technique offers a less invasive screening of the peripheral vascular system.

With our Signa Horizon LX MRI system, some exams can be completed twice as fast as traditional scanners, while still maintaining excellent image resolution. Doctors get the high-quality diagnostic information they need, and patients don’t spend a lot of time being scanned. What’s more, our Signa Horizon LX system has features that help make the exam more pleasant, such as a larger opening, soft lighting, and relaxing music.

3D Imaging

Mass General's 3D Imaging Service takes data from cross-sectional computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies one step farther and produces life-like spatial views of body systems. These images allow physicians to visualize a patient's anatomy more comprehensively and realistically. Mass General has its own full-time, highly experienced staff which is committed to staying current with both computer and medical technology in order to bring patients the most sophisticated clinical imaging service available.

Through 3D Imaging, radiologists and referring physicians are better able to maximize information from CT and MRI exams and readily apply that knowledge to diagnosis, treatment and surgical planning. The implications for enhanced patient care are many, as 3D imaging:

  • minimizes exploratory surgery
  • allows for non-invasive surgical planning
  • reduces operating time
  • minimizes damage to healthy tissues by targeting treatment area
  • serves as a visual tool for patient education
  • reduces healthcare costs

Mass General's 3D Imaging Service is the largest service of its kind in the nation. It is also one of the most comprehensive, offering three-dimensional images of every part of the body. Physicians who are part of the Mass General network can view images directly on-line from any desktop computer. For physicians outside the system, the 3D Imaging Service produces film and black and white as well as color photographs. In addition, through the capabilities of the Radiology Department's Teleradiology Service, physicians can send studies for interpretation and 3D image reconstruction to Mass General from all over the world.

Physicians may request 3D imaging when making a patient's appointment. There is no impact on a patient's time as the 3D imaging occurs after the exam has been completed.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine studies show both the structure of an organ and how it functions. It is useful in early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of numerous medical conditions. Mass General West Imaging offers a full range of clinical diagnostic services for a variety of disorders. These include the central nervous system, skeleton, lungs, endocrine system and genitourinary system. Specialists provide a comprehensive range of cancer staging and screening studies. Full body surveys are available to detect abscesses and other inflammatory disorders.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that does not use x-ray radiation. Mass General West Imaging's highly trained technologists utilize state-of-the-art equipment. Ultrasound exams are performed on all parts of the body, including:

  • renal
  • abdominal
  • pelvic
  • gallbladder
  • liver
  • biliary tree
  • spleen
  • pancreas
  • pelvis
  • retroperitoneum
  • thyroid
  • parathyroid
  • prostate
  • vascular
  • neurovascular
  • rectal
  • breast

Radiologists who are subspecialists in a particular area are readily available for physician consultation.

Most ultrasound examinations require no pre-exam preparation. The exceptions are abdominal ultrasounds where a patient should have nothing to eat or drink for six hours before the examination, and a pelvic ultrasound, where patients should drink and retain 32 ounces of fluid one hour before the exam as a full bladder is needed for the test.

Fluoroscopy

viewing the resultsFluoroscopy is an important radiologic exam helpful in the diagnosis and management of many disorders. Through the use of a fluoroscope, Mass General West Imaging specialists are able to observe the internal structure of opaque parts of the body, such as the heart, lungs, small intestine, large intestine bowel and genitourinary tract. For example, an upper GI (gastrointestinal) series permits a look at the esophagus, stomach and the first portion of the small intestine. Small bowel follow-through includes the remainder of the small intestine. There are many other types of fluoroscopic procedures.

Pre-test preparations for the various fluoroscopic procedures vary. Mass General West Imaging technologists tell patients how to prepare for their tests and give an indication of how long the test will take. Radiologists with a subspecialty in the area being tested read the results and are readily available for consultation with the patient's referring physician.
